Frequently Asked Questions - Travel and Transport

1.   I am not yet in London. But I am worried about getting to the College, any help or suggestion?

It is the most common question for someone who has not previously visited London. If you have booked an accommodation and airport pickup service, at least, you will be picked up from the airport and taken to your temporary accommodation. Then you would only have to worry about getting out and about.

If you unfortunately did not book the airport pickup service but you have accommodation arranged privately or through Anglian, do not worry, you could still get to your room by taking an airport taxi for a slightly higher fare. Just write down the address you intend to go to and show it to the driver, he or she will do the rest for you.

2.   What about going around London once I am there at my accommodation?

London has a fairly efficient transport system comprising bus, train, DLR and the world famous London Underground.  You can buy either a single journey or a two way ticket to your destination from one of the local ticket sellers around your accommodation. Some newsagents sell bus saver tickets that are cheaper than paying cash every time you get on one of them.

However, once you are registered with the College upon arrival, you may apply to the transport operator here called 'Transport for London (TfL)' for a TfL Oyster Card that allows you up to 40% discount on the annual tickets.  Search on the internet or ask at the College Office.

3.   Tell me about buying and travelling on a private car? Does the College have a car park?

Driving a car around may prove to be expensive for a young driver in London. Cars in the second hand market are cheaply available. Before you decide to buy a car, you must ask DVLA, the UK driving regulatory agency to see if your licence is acceptable in the UK. It is illegal in the UK to drive a car without  a driving Licece, valid insurance, MOT (motor test report) and the road tax certificate. Beware that the parking in central London area is very expensive. Research well before buying a car since little things like engine size etc make the difference in its running costs.

The College does not have a car parking facility for its students. However, there are a few car parks nearby, run by the local authorities, which are generally affordable.
