| Rationales | This course covers all aspects of the work with which DSAs would be expected to be familiar. In order to pass the exam and be awarded a certificate one must have two years full time equivalent experience as a dental nurse. The means you need at least one year experience/job/placement after your first year at Anglian College London and before you apply for a DN Certificate. |
| Aims | Designed to prepare students for the NEBDN National Certificate Examination. |
| Learning Outcomes | The theoretical part of this course takes just over one year and is therefore relatively intensive. The 2nd half of the first year involves students visiting Dental Surgeries for practical experience and getting assessed on a number of tasks. The second year will see students working at a Dental Surgery, preferably full-time but coming back to college periodically for revision as laid down by the Health and Care Courses Coordinator. Both years combined, the student will have the necessary tools to become a highly trained member of the dental care staff at a Dental Surgery or similar organisation. |
| Course Contents | Health and Safety and Infection Control in the workplace. Emergencies in the clinical environment. Legal and Ethical Issues in the Provision of Dental Care. Anatomical Structures and Systems Relative to Dental Care. Oral Disease and Pathology. Assesing Patients Oral Health Needs and Treatment Planning. Oral Health Promotion and Preventive Dentistry. Restorative Dentistry. Minor Oral Surgery. Orthodontic Procedures Dental Drugs, materials,Instruments and equipment. Radiography. Communication. |
| Assessment Methods | The examination consists of a written paper, spotter tests, practical tests, and an oral test.
The College also reserves the right to conduct preparatory tests and revision exercises. Exam-80% |
| Reference Books | Recommended text books: *A text book for dental nurses - H Levison - Blackwell - ISBN 0362029560 *Self-assessment questions and answers for dental assistants - Perridge - Wright - ISBN 0723609632 |
| Progression | 1. Employment in a dental practice. 2. Post Certificate Qualification in Dental Nursing |
| Remarks | Although students may pass the examinations, they will not be awarded the certificate until they have completed 24 months at the chair side. Therefore, it is essential that the students regularly attend placements and chair side internships either arranged by the College or in most cases by the student themselves.
Your Responsibilities 1. Ensure you have accumulated required numbers of hours of placement for GDC PIN registration without breaching UKBA regulations. Plese check with our Admissions Officers for advice. 2. Ensure your practical assessments, final exam or verifications are completed 3 months before the end of your course for you to be able to pass the course and extend your visa if required. |
